What is AI?
Artificial intelligence is about making computers do tasks that normally need human intelligence.
What is Artificial Intelligence?
- Artificial means made by people, not natural.
- Intelligence means the ability to learn, understand and solve problems.
- AI is software that can learn from data, find patterns and make decisions or predictions.
When your phone unlocks by seeing your face, when Google Maps suggests a faster route through Shahrah-e-Faisal, or when a chatbot answers your question, AI is at work.
Normal Programs vs AI Programs
A normal program follows rules that a programmer writes by hand. An AI program learns its rules from examples.
Here is a normal program. The programmer decides the rule:
Example
temperature = 41
if temperature > 38:
print("Very hot day in Karachi!")
else:
print("Normal day.")Very hot day in Karachi!
Now imagine you want a program that tells if a message is spam. Writing every rule by hand is almost impossible: spammers keep changing their words. Instead, you give an AI system thousands of messages labelled "spam" or "not spam", and it learns the patterns itself.
Example
# Very simplified idea of learning from examples
examples = {
"You won a prize, send your CNIC now": "spam",
"Class starts at 4 pm tomorrow": "not spam",
"Claim free balance, click this link": "spam",
}
for text, label in examples.items():
print(label, "->", text)spam -> You won a prize, send your CNIC now not spam -> Class starts at 4 pm tomorrow spam -> Claim free balance, click this link
A real model would study many thousands of such examples and then label new messages it has never seen.
What Can AI Do Today?
| Task | Everyday example |
|---|---|
| Understand and write text | Chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude |
| Recognise images | Face unlock, reading number plates |
| Understand speech | Voice typing in Urdu or English |
| Recommend things | YouTube and Daraz suggestions |
| Predict numbers | Electricity demand, crop yields, prices |
| Translate | Urdu to English translation apps |
What AI Cannot Do (Yet)
AI is powerful, but it has clear limits:
- It does not truly "understand" the world the way people do.
- It can be confidently wrong. Chatbots sometimes invent facts.
- It learns from data, so if the data is unfair, the AI can be unfair too.
- It has no feelings, goals or wishes of its own.
Treat AI like a very fast, very well-read assistant that still makes mistakes. Always check important answers yourself.
Narrow AI and General AI
- Narrow AI (also called weak AI) is good at one kind of task, such as playing chess or detecting faces. All AI in real use today is narrow, even when it seems very general.
- General AI (often called AGI) would be able to learn and do any intellectual task a human can. Researchers disagree about when, or whether, this will arrive.
Modern chatbots can do many tasks: write, summarise, code and explain. They are more general than older AI, but they still have the limits listed above.
Key Words
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Data | Examples the AI learns from |
| Model | The learned "brain" that makes predictions |
| Training | The process of learning from data |
| Prediction | The model's answer for a new input |
