Careers in AI

AI has created new jobs and changed many old ones, and you do not need to be a genius in maths to start.

Two Kinds of AI Careers

  1. Building AI: jobs that create, train and deploy AI systems. These need programming and some maths.
  2. Using AI: jobs where AI makes you faster and better at your main work, such as marketing, design, writing, teaching or customer support. These need strong AI tool and prompting skills.

Both are valuable. Almost every job now needs at least the second kind.

Common AI Jobs

JobWhat they doKey skills
Data analystClean data, find patterns, make reportsExcel, SQL, Python, charts
Machine learning engineerTrain and deploy modelsPython, scikit-learn, PyTorch, cloud
AI application developerBuild apps and chatbots using AI APIsJavaScript or Python, APIs, prompting
Data scientistUse statistics and ML to answer business questionsPython, statistics, communication
AI automation specialistConnect AI to business workflowsNo-code tools, APIs, prompting
Prompt and content specialistCreate content and workflows with AIWriting, prompting, editing
AI researcherInvent new methodsAdvanced maths, research, often a postgraduate degree

A Learning Path

Here is a practical order, written as a simple Python list so you can tick off steps:

Example

python
path = [
    "Learn to use AI tools and write good prompts",
    "Learn programming basics in Python",
    "Learn data handling: Excel, then pandas",
    "Learn machine learning with scikit-learn",
    "Build projects: chatbot, predictor, dashboard",
    "Share projects on GitHub and LinkedIn",
]
for number, step in enumerate(path, start=1):
    print(number, step)
Output
1 Learn to use AI tools and write good prompts
2 Learn programming basics in Python
3 Learn data handling: Excel, then pandas
4 Learn machine learning with scikit-learn
5 Build projects: chatbot, predictor, dashboard
6 Share projects on GitHub and LinkedIn

Project Ideas for Your Portfolio

  • A chatbot that answers questions about your college admissions
  • A model that predicts used car prices from OLX-style data
  • A sentiment checker that labels product reviews as positive or negative
  • An AI-powered tool that turns meeting notes into a task list
  • A dashboard of Karachi weather or petrol price trends

A simple sentiment checker starts like this:

Example

python
positive = {"good", "great", "excellent", "fast", "love"}
negative = {"bad", "slow", "broken", "late", "poor"}

review = "delivery was fast and the quality is great"
words = set(review.split())
score = len(words & positive) - len(words & negative)
print("Positive" if score > 0 else "Negative" if score < 0 else "Neutral")
Output
Positive

Later you can replace these word lists with a real trained model or an AI API.

Freelancing with AI

Pakistan has one of the largest freelancer communities in the world. Popular AI-related services include building chatbots for businesses, automating workflows, data cleaning and analysis, and AI-assisted content and design. Clients pay for results, so show real projects, not just certificates.

Start small: one useful project you can explain clearly is worth more than ten unfinished courses.
