Matric English Exam Preparation: Grammar, Essays and Letters

A practical plan for Matric English: what to revise in grammar, how to prepare essays, letters, applications and comprehension, and how to manage time in the paper.

Start with a Plan

The Matric English paper tests three things: grammar, writing and reading. Students who prepare all three in a planned way score well, even if their English is not perfect. This guide shows what to revise and links to free notes for each part.

1. Grammar

Grammar questions are the easiest marks to secure, because the rules do not change. Focus on these topics first:

After each topic, do the exercises at the end of the level and check the answer key.

2. Essays

Prepare ten to fifteen common topics well rather than fifty topics badly. For each essay, learn the outline, the main point of each paragraph and one quotation. Write the essay in your own words in practice.

3. Letters and Applications

The format carries marks, so learn it exactly: address, date, salutation, subject, body and closing. Then practise a few common topics.

4. Stories, Paragraphs and Dialogues

Short stories should have a clear beginning, middle and end, and a moral. Paragraphs need a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a conclusion.

5. Comprehension and Translation

Read the unseen passage twice before you answer. Find the key word of each question in the passage and answer in complete sentences.

A Simple Revision Timetable

| Week | What to Revise | | --- | --- | | 1 | Tenses and helping verbs | | 2 | Passive voice and narration | | 3 | Articles, prepositions, punctuation and common errors | | 4 | Essays (five topics) and letters | | 5 | Applications, stories and paragraphs | | 6 | Unseen passages, translation and a full practice paper |

For the last week, use the Final Revision Plan and the Final Practice paper.

In the Examination Hall

  1. Read every question twice before you start.
  2. Attempt the questions you know best first.
  3. Keep your handwriting neat and leave a line between paragraphs.
  4. Leave the last ten minutes to check spelling, tenses and punctuation.
