Parts of an Essay
An essay is a piece of writing on one topic, arranged in paragraphs. A good essay has three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.
| Part | What to Write | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | Introduce the topic with a quotation or a strong first line. | 1 paragraph |
| Body | Main points, one point in each paragraph, with examples. | 3 to 5 paragraphs |
| Conclusion | A summary, your opinion, a hope or a message. | 1 paragraph |
How to Write a Good Essay in the Exam
- Read the topic carefully and make a short outline (main points) before writing.
- Use simple, correct sentences. Correct grammar is more important than difficult words.
- Start each paragraph with a topic sentence and use linking words (firstly, moreover, however, in short).
- Add a relevant quotation, a verse of Iqbal or a proverb where it fits.
- Write a heading, keep a margin, and leave a line between paragraphs. Revise your essay at the end.
If you have not prepared a topic, the Universal Essay shows one essay you can adapt to almost any topic.
